Topics 5.3–5.4 explained how and where industrialization began and spread. Topic 5.5 covers the second wave of technology this era produced — often called the Second Industrial Revolution — which didn't just make more textiles faster, it collapsed distance and time itself, reshaping production, transportation, communication, trade, and migration all at once. This topic is the direct technological engine behind Unit 6's New Imperialism: none of the territorial control covered there was logistically possible without the innovations named here.

The Bessemer process: cheap steel changes everything downstream

Henry Bessemer's process, developed in 1856, blasted hot air through molten iron to burn off impurities, producing strong, uniform steel in minutes rather than hours. This single innovation is worth understanding as a root cause, not just an isolated fact: cheap, mass-producible steel is what made the rail networks, ocean-going ships, and structural engineering of the rest of this topic economically viable at scale. Before Bessemer, steel was expensive and produced in small batches; after, it became the basic material of industrial infrastructure worldwide.

The telegraph: instant communication across oceans

The telegraph collapsed communication time from weeks (the speed of a ship carrying a letter) to minutes. The first successful transatlantic telegraph cable was completed in 1866, and by the 1870s–1880s, cables extended from Europe to Asia via the Suez Canal, creating a genuinely global telegraph network for the first time in human history. This is a direct causal input to Unit 6: a colonial power in London could now issue orders to administrators in India or Africa in minutes instead of months, which is precisely what made large, tightly-controlled overseas empires administratively practical.

Railroads: moving resources and people at industrial scale

Railroads, built cheaply available thanks to Bessemer steel, let states move raw materials — timber, coal, iron, oil — and people at a scale and speed no earlier land transport could match. The US Transcontinental Railroad is the exam's standard example: it let American industry move natural resources across the continent efficiently, directly enabling the kind of westward economic integration that earlier wagon or river transport couldn't sustain.

Steamships and the Suez Canal: ocean trade freed from wind

Steamships burned coal to produce dependable power, letting vessels travel upstream against currents and across oceans without depending on favorable wind — a direct technological successor to the caravel and lateen sail from Topic 4.1, solving the same navigation problem with an entirely different power source. This created a genuinely new logistical need: coaling stations at strategic points along major trade routes became essential refueling stops, and controlling those stations became a specific strategic goal for imperial powers in Unit 6. The Suez Canal (completed 1869) compounded this by physically shortening the sea route between Europe and Asia, cutting out the long voyage around Africa that Topic 4.2's Vasco da Gama had originally pioneered.

The internal combustion engine: the next power source arrives

Late in this period, the internal combustion engine began powering automobiles and, eventually, airplanes, making gasoline a critical fuel and previewing the 20th-century energy transitions covered in later units.

Why this matters for the exam

Topic 5.5 rewards you for treating these technologies as causally connected rather than a disconnected list: Bessemer steel enables railroads and ships; the telegraph enables long-distance imperial administration; steamships plus the Suez Canal shrink the time-cost of controlling distant territory. A strong essay uses this topic as the mechanism explaining Unit 6's New Imperialism — technological capability (Topic 5.5) is precisely what turned earlier-era imperial ambition into logistically achievable global control.
