SAT & PSAT Math 2026‑27: Test Dates, Format, Timing and Question Counts
Four exams, one test. That is the single most useful thing to know about the SAT Suite, and it is the thing almost no one tells parents. The PSAT 8/9 an eighth grader sits in October, the PSAT 10 a sophomore sits in March, the PSAT/NMSQT a junior sits in the autumn, and the SAT itself are not four different tests with four different study plans. They run the same length, ask the same number of questions, cover the same four math domains, and are scored on one connected scale. What changes between them is how hard the questions push.
This guide sets out what the College Board publishes about all four — the dates, the structure, the timing, the question counts, and the math content — so that a family can plan a two-year run at the SAT instead of reacting to whichever test the school announces next. Every number below comes from the College Board's own published specifications, and the sources are listed at the foot of the page.
The 2026-27 calendar, in one place
The SAT Suite splits into two very different scheduling worlds, and confusing them is the most common planning mistake we see.
The PSAT-level tests are administered by schools inside a testing window. A family does not register, does not pick a date, and does not pay a College Board fee. The school chooses a day inside the window and tells students when it is. For the fall 2026 cycle the window for every PSAT-level assessment is 1 October to 30 October 2026, and for that autumn only, schools may also administer the PSAT/NMSQT on Saturday 17 October 2026. Districts may test on as many days inside the window as they need.
The SAT is administered on fixed national weekend dates that a student registers for individually, with a deadline roughly two to three weeks before each date.

Deadlines expire at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Many students also take the SAT on a School Day administration arranged by their district, which is a separate schedule set locally.
The spring side of the calendar belongs to the younger levels. The PSAT 10 is administered in a window running 1 March to 30 April 2027. The PSAT 8/9 has no fixed season at all: a school may offer it in the autumn window or the spring one, and which it uses is a district decision. If you do not know which your school uses, the test coordinator or a counsellor does — it is not published centrally, and guessing costs a term of preparation.
What each level is for, and who sits it
The four rungs map onto grades, but the mapping is a default rather than a rule.

Only one of these carries a consequence beyond information, and it is worth being precise about it. The PSAT/NMSQT is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program, and only the junior-year administration counts for that purpose. A tenth grader who sits the PSAT/NMSQT — some schools offer it — receives a score and useful practice, but is not entering the competition.
The other three are diagnostics. That is not a reason to dismiss them. A PSAT 8/9 result in ninth grade tells a family, two full years before it matters, whether the mathematics is on track. Nothing else in the school calendar offers that.
Structure: what a student actually faces
Every assessment in the digital SAT Suite has the same shape. The College Board states the total plainly: 2 hours and 14 minutes, and 98 questions, split into two sections.

The 10-minute break falls between the two sections, so the test runs about two and a half hours door to door rather than the 2:14 of testing time.
Not every question counts. Each module carries a small number of pretest items the College Board is trialling for future tests, and they do not affect the score. In the Reading and Writing section each module holds 25 operational questions and 2 pretest questions; in Math, 20 operational and 2 pretest. So of the 98 questions a student answers, 90 are scored and 8 are not — and there is no way to tell which is which, which is exactly the point. Answer everything.
The test adapts, and that changes how you should pace
Each section is two modules, and the second module is chosen based on performance on the first. The first module contains a broad mix of easy, medium, and hard questions; depending on how a student does, the second module is either harder or easier. A harder second module is not a punishment — it is the route to the higher end of the score range.
Two practical consequences follow. First, the first module carries weight beyond its own questions, because it decides which second module a student sees. Second, there is no skipping ahead: within a module a student can move freely, but once a module is submitted it is closed. Time management happens inside a 32- or 35-minute box, not across the whole section.
The Math section in detail
Math is 44 questions in 70 minutes — an average of about 95 seconds per question, though in practice the early questions in a module are meant to go faster than that and the later ones slower, because questions inside each module are arranged from easiest to hardest.
Most questions are multiple choice. About 25% are student-produced response questions, where a student types the answer rather than choosing it. Those are worth practising specifically: a student who has only ever picked from four options loses time and confidence the first time there is nothing to pick from, and the format removes the option of working backwards from the answers.
A calculator is allowed on the entire Math section. There is no separate no-calculator portion — the digital format replaced that split. A graphing calculator is built into the testing application, and a student may also bring their own approved one. Both facts matter: the built-in tool is worth learning before test day rather than meeting it cold, and a familiar personal calculator is still allowed for anyone who prefers it.
The four math domains
The College Board's specifications divide the Math section into four content domains with published weights.

Two things in that table repay attention. The first is the balance: linear and nonlinear algebra together are about 70% of the section. A student who is comfortable with lines, systems, quadratics, exponentials and function notation has most of the Math section covered, whatever their intuition about "SAT tricks" suggests. Geometry, which many families assume dominates, is roughly one question in seven.
The second is the footnote that matters for the youngest level. The domain is called Geometry and Trigonometry on the SAT, PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10, but simply Geometry on the PSAT 8/9 — the PSAT 8/9 does not include trigonometry questions. That is the clearest published statement of how the rungs differ: not in structure, not in question count, but in how far the content reaches.

If all four assessments run 98 questions in 2 hours 14 minutes across the same four domains, what actually separates a PSAT 8/9 from an SAT? Difficulty and reach. The questions are written at the level appropriate to the grade, and the content ceiling rises as the ladder does — trigonometry appearing at the PSAT 10 level being the explicit example.
This is why a practice set matters more than a practice test. Sitting a full SAT paper in ninth grade produces a discouraging number and little diagnostic information. Working through PSAT 8/9-level problems in the same four domains produces something a student can act on, and it builds the fluency that makes the next rung feel like the same test rather than a new one.
It is also why "study for the SAT" is the wrong frame in eighth or ninth grade, and the right one in eleventh. The ladder is designed to be climbed early rather than repeated: a student who finds their level comfortable should move up rather than sit it again.
Scores, and what a family should read into them
The SAT Suite is reported on a vertical score scale, which means scores from different levels of the suite are designed to be compared with one another. A PSAT 10 score and an SAT score sit on the same connected scale, so improvement across two years is visible as a single line rather than as four unrelated numbers. That is the practical argument for taking the lower rungs seriously: they are the only way to see the trend before the score that counts.
Score reports also carry benchmarks — indicators of whether a student is on track for college-level work. A benchmark missed in ninth grade is a two-year problem with a two-year runway. The same benchmark missed in the spring of eleventh grade is a much harder conversation.
How much of the final score is Math?
Exactly half, on every total in the suite — and this is worth knowing before deciding how to split study time. The College Board reports each assessment as two section scores of equal range, and the total is their sum.

So a point of Math is worth exactly a point of Reading and Writing, everywhere except one place — and that one place is the one families most often plan around.
The National Merit Selection Index is not a 50-50 split. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation calculates it as twice the Reading and Writing section score plus the Math section score, divided by ten, on a 48–228 scale. Reading and Writing therefore carries two thirds of that index and Math one third. The PSAT 8/9 does not produce a Selection Index at all.
The practical reading: if the goal is a higher SAT total, Math and Reading and Writing deserve equal effort. If the goal is National Merit specifically, Reading and Writing is the heavier lever, and a plan built only on maths practice is optimising the smaller third of that particular index.
National Merit, precisely
The PSAT/NMSQT is the only assessment in the suite that feeds the National Merit Scholarship Program, and the College Board states the limit plainly: students who take the PSAT 10 or the PSAT 8/9 do not receive an NMSC Selection Index score and are not considered for entry to the programme. A tenth grader sitting the PSAT/NMSQT is in the same position — the index exists, but only the junior-year administration is the qualifying one.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation uses the Selection Index as its initial screen of students entering its scholarship programs. That is the whole mechanism at this stage: one number, computed from two section scores, and weighted as shown above — Reading and Writing doubled, Math counted once, the sum divided by ten, on a 48–228 scale.
Three consequences a family should plan around.
- The year matters more than the score. An excellent PSAT/NMSQT in tenth grade earns practice and a useful diagnostic, and nothing else. If National Merit is the goal, the eleventh-grade October window is the one appointment that cannot be moved.
- Reading and Writing is the heavier lever, by design. Two thirds of the index against Math's one third. A student two hundred points stronger in Math than in Reading and Writing is, for this particular competition, strong in the lighter half.
- Missing the test is not automatically the end. The College Board directs students who could not take the PSAT/NMSQT but want to enter the programme to the National Merit Scholarship Program section of the PSAT/NMSQT Student Guide, which explains how to request information about an alternate route of entry. That request has its own timing, so it is worth reading early rather than after the window closes.
What comes after the index — how many students are recognised, what a Semifinalist cutoff is in a given state, what Finalists must submit — is set by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, not by the College Board, and it moves from year to year. We deliberately do not print those figures here: a cutoff quoted from last year's cycle is the kind of number a family plans around and then discovers was never theirs. Take them from NMSC directly, for the class year you are actually in.
A practical preparation timeline
The dates above imply a rhythm, and it is worth writing it down.
- Late summer into September. If a junior is sitting the PSAT/NMSQT in the October window, this is the preparation period, and it is short. Six weeks of steady math practice moves a score more than a frantic fortnight.
- January to February. Sophomores head for the PSAT 10 window that opens 1 March. Ninth graders whose district tests in spring are on the same clock.
- The spring of eleventh grade. The March, May and June SAT dates are the first serious attempt for most students, and they leave room for a retake in the autumn of twelfth grade.
- Autumn of twelfth grade. The August, September, October and November dates are the last that comfortably reach most application deadlines. Check each college's own deadline rather than assuming.
Across all of it, the useful unit of work is a short, regular set of problems in the four domains above — not an occasional full-length test. Full tests measure; problem sets improve.

Two things are worth stating plainly. We cover mathematics only. Reading and Writing is a different skill, taught a different way, and doing it halfway would be worse than not doing it.
