Communication technology collapses distance further

Where Topic 5.5's telegraph first let messages cross oceans in minutes, this era's technologies went further: radio, cellular communication, and eventually the internet reduced the practical problem of geographic distance to a degree the telegraph era couldn't match, enabling continuous rather than occasional long-distance contact. This is worth treating as a direct technological escalation rather than a wholly new development — the same underlying goal (collapsing communication time) that drove the 19th-century telegraph now operated at a completely different order of speed and scale.

Transportation: air travel and the shipping container
