Topics 9.1–9.2 covered technology's genuine benefits and its uneven, sometimes limited, effects on disease. Topic 9.3 turns to the environmental side of that same tension: the same industrialization and population growth that raised living standards also produced a set of interconnected environmental crises, along with the first real international attempts to address them collectively.

The scale of the underlying pressure: population growth

The exam wants a precise demographic anchor for this topic: world population grew from roughly 1.5 billion in 1900 to just over 6 billion by 2000 — a fourfold increase within a single century. This single figure explains much of what follows: feeding, housing, and powering four times as many people put direct, compounding strain on land, water, and energy resources, a demographic driver worth citing alongside the Green Revolution's own environmental footprint from Topic 9.1.

Specific environmental effects worth naming precisely

The exam expects specific, named environmental problems rather than a vague "the environment got worse": deforestation, driven directly by the need to convert more land to agriculture to feed the growing population described above; desertification, land degradation that converts productive land into desert-like conditions; weakened air quality from industrial and vehicle emissions; strained freshwater supplies — worth knowing that only about 3% of Earth's water is usable freshwater, making this a genuinely finite resource under mounting demand; and sharpening competition over resources as population and industrial demand both continued rising. The Kyoto Protocol (1997) was an early binding international agreement targeting greenhouse gas emission reductions, and the Paris Agreement (2015) represented a later, broader international framework for climate action. Both agreements are worth knowing as concrete evidence that environmental debates produced actual diplomatic institution-building, not just scientific findings or public argument.

Development versus conservation: a genuine tension, not a simple villain story

The exam wants you to recognize a real tension rather than a one-sided narrative: economic development that lifts populations out of poverty (echoing Topic 9.1's productivity gains) frequently conflicts directly with environmental conservation goals, particularly for developing nations pursuing the same industrial growth path wealthy nations already completed. This tension — not simply "industry bad, environment good" — is the more sophisticated framing this topic actually rewards.

Why this matters for the exam

Topic 9.3 rewards citing specific figures (1.5 billion to 6+ billion population growth, ~3% usable freshwater, ~half of oil reserves consumed) and specific named agreements (Kyoto Protocol 1997, Paris Agreement 2015) rather than vague environmental concern.
