Katy ISD Credit by Exam — Parent's Guide for West Houston / Katy Families (2026)
Katy ISD is one of the largest school districts in Texas, with ~90,000 students across the Energy Corridor and west-Houston suburban communities. The district's student body is highly diverse — large Asian-American, Hispanic, and African-American populations alongside English-speaking families. Schools in the district include Katy HS, Cinco Ranch HS, Seven Lakes HS, Tompkins HS, Morton Ranch HS, Mayde Creek HS, Taylor HS, Paetow HS, Jordan HS, and others. Credit by Exam (CBE) is a frequent tool families use for math acceleration, foreign-language credit, and clearing schedule room for AP and dual-credit work.
How Katy ISD families typically use CBE
- Math acceleration before high school. A strong middle-schooler tests out of Algebra 1 to enter their high school at Geometry — common at Cinco Ranch, Seven Lakes, and Tompkins where AP Calculus BC enrollment is heavy.
- Heritage-language credit for the international Energy Corridor community. Mandarin, Spanish, Hindi/Telugu, Korean, Vietnamese, and Arabic-speaking families convert home language fluency into transcript credit.
- Summer credit recovery without losing a school year.
- Schedule clearing for HCC dual-credit. Earning a year of social-studies or foreign-language via CBE makes room for Houston Community College dual-enrollment in 11th–12th grade.
Two CBE routes
- UTHS CBE — administered year-round by UT Austin
- District-administered CBE windows — Katy ISD
Always confirm Katy ISD's current CBE policy with your campus counselor before registering for any exam.
