Brazosport ISD Credit by Exam — Parent Guide: 10 Testing Windows a Year, Both Tracks District-Paid (2026-2027)

Brazosport ISD serves Freeport, Lake Jackson, Clute and the rest of Brazoria County's Gulf Coast communities, and like every Texas district it must offer Credit by Examination. What sets BISD apart from most districts we've surveyed is testing frequency: where many Texas districts run four windows a year, Brazosport tests almost every month of the school year — and pays the exam fee on both of its CBE tracks, which several neighboring districts do not.

Ten testing windows, not four

Brazosport ISD's handbook states it plainly: the district tests monthly on regular school days, on campus, from August through May, with no testing in December, June or July. For 2026–2027 that works out to ten separate registration windows and testing dates:

The registration window closes 4:00 PM on the last listed day — not the test date itself. Registration spreadsheets are due by then, submitted through the campus, not directly by the family. The state minimum is four windows a year (19 TAC §74.24); Brazosport publishes well over double that, which means a missed window here costs a family a few weeks, not a full academic quarter like it can in a quarterly-only district.

Both tracks, and the district pays for both

Texas law splits Credit by Examination into two tracks, and Brazosport's own application paperwork states plainly, for both of them, that the district covers the cost:

Exams come from the University of Texas at Austin — BISD's handbook states the district "has joined with the University of Texas in Austin" for CBE — which is worth knowing because study guides and the full exam catalog live on UT's site, not Texas Tech's: highschool.utexas.edu/cbestudyguides for study guides, and utexas.app.box.com/v/uths-cbe-available for the full list of what's offered.

Two attempts, and a CBE can replace a STAAR — sometimes

State law caps a student at two attempts on any one CBE, and a specific exam can only be attempted once per testing window. Brazosport's handbook adds a detail worth knowing if your student is in a STAAR-tested grade or course:

• CBE with prior instruction: the student still has to pass the corresponding STAAR EOC to satisfy the graduation requirement, even after earning CBE credit.
• CBE without prior instruction (acceleration): the STAAR EOC for that specific course is not required.
• Grades 3–8: passing a CBE in a STAAR-tested subject exempts that grade's STAAR — but the student then takes whichever STAAR corresponds to the new placement. A 4th grader who passes the 4th-grade Math CBE and moves into 5th-grade math takes the 5th-grade Math STAAR, not neither.

Skipping a whole grade level takes four exams and months of lead time

Elementary and middle-school students (grades 1–8) accelerating a full grade level — not just one course — must pass CBEs in all four core areas: language arts, mathematics, science and social studies, each at 80% or higher. Brazosport's own guidance is direct about the timeline: "it is highly recommended that… you meet with your counselor at least four to six months prior to the start of a new school year" if a full grade skip is the goal.

That is a materially longer runway than a single-course CBE, and it is the single most common misunderstanding we see from families asking about "skipping a grade" — it is four exams, not one, and the district plans the whole sequence with you at that first counselor meeting, using an Individualized Student Testing Plan the counselor keeps on file.

The example Brazosport puts on its own form: 7th grade math → Algebra 1

Brazosport's acceleration application form asks directly whether a student is "taking CBEs for courses that are prerequisites for an accelerated placement," and gives its own worked example in parentheses: "a 7th grade student taking CBE for 8th grade math in order to be placed in Algebra I."

This is the same pattern we've now confirmed in more than one Texas district: Algebra 1 requires Grade 8 math or its equivalent under the Algebra 1 TEKS (Texas Education Code §111.39), so a 7th grader testing out of 8th-grade math is a direct, single-subject path onto the advanced math track — distinct from, and far shorter than, a full grade-level skip.

Results and placement

Scores arrive 10–15 working days after testing, reported to the family by the campus counselor or testing coordinator. Because schedule changes after the school year starts are "unlikely" per the district's own guidance, every CBE and any retest needs to be finished before the new school year begins for a placement change to take effect — another reason the summer windows carry more weight than the fall or spring ones for families targeting the coming school year.
