Unit 1.3 — Spatial Patterns, Distance Decay, and Diffusion

You now have the vocabulary to describe individual places and regions. This lesson shifts to something more dynamic: how geographers describe the arrangement of things across space, how that arrangement thins out with distance, and how new ideas and practices spread from one place to another. These three concepts — spatial pattern, distance decay, and diffusion — show up constantly in every later unit, from disease spread in population studies to the diffusion of religions and languages in Unit 3.

Spatial patterns: describing how things are arranged

A spatial pattern is simply the arrangement of a set of points, lines, or areas across a landscape, and geographers use a small set of terms to describe the patterns they see:

  • Clustered (or agglomerated) — features grouped closely together, such as houses in a dense subdivision or factories concentrated in an industrial district.
  • Dispersed (or scattered) — features spread widely apart, such as isolated farmsteads across the Great Plains.
  • Linear — features arranged along a line, such as towns strung along a river, a rail line, or a highway.
  • Centralized — features arranged around a single core point, such as businesses radiating outward from a city's central business district.

Recognizing a pattern is often the first step toward explaining it: a clustered settlement pattern usually points to a shared resource, a defensive advantage, or strong social ties pulling people together, while a dispersed pattern often points to large individual landholdings, self-sufficient farming, or a lack of any single unifying resource point. The exam sometimes shows you a map excerpt and simply asks you to name and then explain the pattern — description and causal reasoning are both being tested in the same question.

Density, concentration, and dispersion — three related but distinct measurements

Closely tied to spatial pattern are three measurements the exam distinguishes carefully:

  • Density is the frequency of something within a given area — how many people, houses, or animals occupy each square mile.
  • Concentration describes how tightly grouped or spread out those things are relative to each other across the full area under study — this is essentially another word for the clustered-versus-dispersed spectrum above, but applied specifically to a numerical distribution rather than a visual pattern.
  • Dispersion, sometimes used interchangeably with a low concentration value, describes the degree to which features are spread out rather than bunched.

A useful distinction: two regions can have identical density (the same number of people per square mile, on average) while having very different concentration — one region might have that population spread evenly across every town, while the other crams almost everyone into one city and leaves the rest of the region nearly empty. The exam rewards noticing that density alone doesn't tell you the whole spatial story.

Distance decay: why influence fades with distance

Distance decay describes the tendency for interaction, similarity, or influence between two places to diminish as the distance between them increases. A city's cultural and economic influence over its surrounding region is strongest close to the city and weakens the farther out you travel — a suburb immediately adjacent to a downtown feels its pull (commuting patterns, media market, shopping habits) far more strongly than a rural town two hundred miles away, even if both technically sit within the same state or region.

Distance decay isn't only about literal physical distance, either. Geographers also talk about time-distance (how long a trip takes, which matters more than raw mileage — a destination an hour away by highway is functionally "closer" than one twenty miles away down an unpaved road) and the way modern communication technology has flattened distance decay for information, even though it still applies fully to the physical movement of people and goods. When you see a question about why a phenomenon's influence weakens moving outward from a central point, distance decay is almost always the concept being tested.

Diffusion: how things spread, and the specific types that matter

Diffusion is the process by which an idea, innovation, disease, or cultural practice spreads outward from its point of origin — its hearth — to other places over time. The AP exam is precise about which of several diffusion types a scenario illustrates, so learn the distinctions cold rather than treating "diffusion" as one undifferentiated concept.

Relocation diffusion

In relocation diffusion, an idea or practice spreads because the people who carry it physically move to a new location, bringing the idea with them and leaving the original hearth behind (or continuing to hold onto it there too). Immigration is the clearest example: when a group migrates to a new country, they carry their language, religion, and customs with them, and those customs now exist in the new location because people relocated — not because the idea leapt on its own.

Expansion diffusion

In expansion diffusion, an idea spreads outward from its hearth while also remaining, and often strengthening, at the hearth itself — no one has to move for the idea to travel. Expansion diffusion splits into three further subtypes that the exam tests as separate, nameable mechanisms:

  • Contagious diffusion spreads rapidly through a population with little regard for social status or hierarchy, moving through direct, widespread contact — much like a contagious illness passes between anyone who comes into proximity, regardless of who they are. A rumor or a viral social media trend spreading through a densely connected population is a modern example.
  • Hierarchical diffusion spreads from one node of power or prestige to another, skipping over the space in between rather than moving continuously outward — a fashion trend or a new technology often appears first in large, influential cities, then jumps directly to other large cities, and only later trickles down to smaller towns, even ones that sit geographically between the two big cities.
  • Stimulus diffusion occurs when the underlying idea spreads and inspires a new, locally adapted version, even though the original specific practice or product doesn't transfer intact. The idea of a fast-food restaurant format has diffused globally, but individual chains adapt their menus to local tastes and ingredients — the concept diffused, the exact product did not.

Why this matters for the exam

Later units ask you to apply every one of these terms to a specific, concrete case: distance decay explains why a disease outbreak's severity often correlates with proximity to its origin point; hierarchical diffusion explains why a new consumer technology reaches Dallas before it reaches a small rural county between two major cities; relocation diffusion explains why a particular language or religion appears in an unexpected location on a map, disconnected from its region of origin. Free-response questions frequently give you a real-world scenario and ask you to identify which specific type of diffusion (not just "diffusion" generally) is occurring and to justify the choice with a detail from the prompt — precision on which subtype applies, and why the other subtypes don't fit as well, is exactly what separates a strong answer from a vague one.
