Unit 6.1 — Urbanization: Processes and Patterns Worldwide

How geographers measure urbanization, why cities form and grow, and how the timing of industrialization produces very different urban growth stories across the world today.

Unit 5 tracked how humans arrange themselves across farmland — where crops get grown and why a hectare in one place feeds ten families while a hectare somewhere else feeds one. Unit 6 turns to the opposite pole of that same story: the places where almost nobody grows food but almost everyone eventually ends up living. Urbanization is the umbrella term for that shift — the rising share of a population living in cities, and the physical spread of city land itself — and it is one of the most consistent trends in the entire human record. This lesson builds the baseline vocabulary and the big worldwide pattern before later lessons dig into how cities are shaped internally and how they rank against each other.

What "urbanization" actually measures

Geographers keep two separate ideas in view whenever they talk about urbanization, and mixing them up is a common exam trap. The level of urbanization is a percentage — the share of a country's total population that lives in urban areas at a given moment. The rate of urban growth is a speed — how fast the urban population is increasing year over year, usually expressed as an annual percentage change. A country can be highly urbanized but growing slowly (most of Western Europe: already 75–80% urban, adding only a fraction of a percent a year), or lightly urbanized but growing explosively (much of sub-Saharan Africa: under 45% urban in many countries, but with urban populations doubling in a generation). Confusing the two leads to backwards conclusions about which regions are changing fastest.

As of the most recent global estimates, just over 57% of the world's population lives in an urban area — a threshold humanity crossed for the first time only around 2007, when city dwellers first outnumbered rural residents globally. That crossing point is itself a useful exam fact: for nearly all of human history, the overwhelming majority of people lived rurally, and the urban majority is a genuinely recent development.

Why cities form at all: site, situation, and surplus

A settlement's site is its exact physical location — the terrain, water access, and resources at that specific spot. Its situation is its position relative to everything around it — the surrounding region, trade routes, and neighboring settlements it connects to. Both matter for why a city exists where it does, but situation tends to matter more for why a city keeps growing once founded, because situation determines how easily goods, people, and information can move through it.

The deeper precondition for any city, though, is agricultural surplus. A population can only support non-farming specialists — artisans, merchants, priests, soldiers, administrators — once farmers in the surrounding countryside produce more food than they themselves consume. This is why the first cities appear in the historical record only after the domestication of plants and animals reorganized rural production around surplus, not subsistence. Every city, ancient or modern, still rests on that same underlying arithmetic: someone else has to be growing more food than they eat.

The industrial engine behind modern urban growth

While ancient and medieval cities existed for millennia, the urbanization curve bends sharply upward with industrialization. Factory production concentrated jobs in specific locations in a way agricultural work never had, and that concentration pulled rural labor toward city centers on a scale earlier economies never approached. Britain industrialized first and urbanized first; by the mid-19th century it had already become the first country in history where more people lived in cities than in the countryside. The same sequence — industrial jobs appear, rural labor migrates toward them, the urban share of the population climbs — has repeated in country after country ever since, just on different timelines.

Geographers describe the pull toward cities and the push away from rural areas as two sides of the same migration decision. Push factors include mechanized agriculture reducing the number of farm laborers a given plot of land actually needs, land fragmentation from inheritance dividing family plots below a viable size, and rural poverty or conflict. Pull factors include the concentration of wage-paying jobs, access to education and healthcare infrastructure that rural areas often lack, and simply the presence of family or community networks already established in a city. Neither push nor pull alone fully explains rural-to-urban migration — it is almost always some combination of both operating on a given household at once.

Two different urbanization stories: earlier-industrializing versus later-industrializing countries

The timing of a country's urbanization matters enormously for what that urbanization looks like on the ground. Countries that industrialized earlier — the United States, the United Kingdom, much of Western Europe, Japan — urbanized gradually, over a century or more, with infrastructure (housing stock, sewer and water systems, transit networks, zoning regulation) generally keeping pace with population growth, because the economic base that pulled people into cities also generated the tax revenue and institutional capacity to build that infrastructure alongside them.

Countries urbanizing later and faster — much of sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and parts of Latin America and Southeast Asia over the past several decades — have often urbanized at a pace their governments' infrastructure and formal housing markets could not match. Geographers call the resulting mismatch overurbanization: a city's population growing faster than its economic base and its formal infrastructure can absorb, producing large informal settlements (favelas, informal housing on a city's periphery, unplanned peripheral neighborhoods known by many local names) where housing, sanitation, and legal land tenure lag well behind population. Overurbanization is not the same thing as urbanization generally — it specifically describes urban growth that has outrun a city's capacity to formally house and service its new residents, and it is heavily concentrated in the fastest-growing cities of the developing world today.

Beyond growth: how urbanized populations later redistribute themselves

Urbanization does not stop once a population reaches a majority-urban share — the internal geography of where within and around a metropolitan region people choose to live keeps shifting. Suburbanization is the movement of population from a central city outward into surrounding, lower-density residential areas that remain economically tied to that city — commuting back in for jobs even while living outside the urban core. In the United States this accelerated sharply after 1945, driven by federal highway construction, affordable mass-produced housing developments, and mortgage financing that favored new suburban construction over existing urban housing stock.

Two related but distinct processes go a step further. Exurbanization describes population moving even further out, into a low-density, semi-rural fringe beyond the suburbs proper, while its residents still commute back to the metropolitan core for work — exurban residents are choosing space and a rural feel while remaining economically dependent on the city. Counterurbanization is different in kind, not just degree: it is net migration away from urban areas altogether, toward smaller towns or rural regions, by people who are not commuting back to a metropolitan job at all — often retirees, remote workers, or people prioritizing lower cost of living over urban job access. Distinguishing these three — a commuter who moved to a suburb, a commuter who moved further out to an exurb, and someone who left the metropolitan orbit entirely — is a recurring multiple-choice distinction on this topic.

Why this matters for the exam

Expect direct questions that test whether you can tell level of urbanization apart from rate of urban growth using a data table or two contrasting countries, and expect the site/situation distinction to reappear as a quick factual check. Overurbanization is a frequently tested vocabulary term specifically because it is easy to confuse with ordinary urbanization — be ready to identify it from a description of informal settlements and infrastructure lagging behind population, not just from rapid population growth alone. Finally, keep suburbanization, exurbanization, and counterurbanization straight by anchoring each to the same question: does this person still commute back to the city for work, and how far out did they move? That single test resolves almost every exam item built around these three terms.
